Date Night

Federal Hill: Hersh’s

There are many different styles of pizza; there’s deep dish, thin crust, Sicilian, Neapolitan and more. I’ve reviewed a few different styles before but Neapolitan style pizza in Baltimore is hard to come by and it’s my favorite. Fortunately I found Hersh’s Pizza in Federal Hill and it’s hands down the best Neapolitan pizza I’ve ever had.

My friend and I met for dinner early enough where we were able to get the happy hour special. (2 for 1 beers!) After each ordering a drink we decided to share the Polenta appetizer. It was creamy polenta, lightly fried sitting on a bed of red sauce with green sauce on top and a sprinkling of cheese. It almost looked like the Italian flag and it was wonderful. I’ve never had polenta before and thanks to this dish I will most certainly be trying it again.

The pizza’s at Hersh’s are personal pies that arrive uncut, true to their Neapolitan form. My friend and I decided to order two pies and split them. The first pie we ordered was the Bianco e Verde. This was a white pizza with housemade ricotta, spinach, lemon, garlic and parmigiano reggiano. It was very good.

The other pizza we ordered was the Fumo e Fucco. This was our favorite of the two. This pizza came topped with smoked mozzarella cheese, fried eggplant, hot chili oil and lamb sausage. The chili oil added a nice bit of heat to the pizza and we loved it. If you’re ever at Hersh’s, this is the pizza you should order!
