Mount Vernon: XS

Personally, I’m not a huge fan of diners. With so many different options on the menu everything usually ends up tasting kind of ‘meh.’ So when I heard about XS and looked at their menu, I wasn’t expecting too much because they offered a little bit of everything. However I read some pretty great reviews on Yelp so I decided to get over myself and head to Mount Vernon to try XS anyway, and boy am I glad that I did. The menu at XS covers everything from brunch to sushi to cocktails and more. On this particular visit I tried some of their brunch options, but I will be back soon to sample more of the items on their menu.

Fun fact, this restaurant is not for you if you cannot climb up multiple flights of stairs. But the atmosphere inside is incredible. There’s tons of art and it’s just an overall interesting place that’s worth a visit for the scenery alone. Because it was only 10am, even though XS has plenty of options no matter what you’re craving, my friend and I decided to stick with ordering traditional brunch options.

My friend ordered the Cinnamon French Toast with Cream Cheese Icing. She was afraid the icing would be too sweet for her and she ordered it on the side. The dish comes with two thick pieces of french toast sprinkled with powdered sugar and some cream cheese icing. The dish was too decadent for me but my friend loved it. She said it tasted like a cinnamon bun and she would order it again in an instant.

Personally, I have a thing for Mexican-inspired egg dishes so I ordered the Breakfast Burrito. It was a tortilla stuffed with scrambled eggs, onions, peppers, pepper jack cheese and bacon. This was one of the better breakfast burritos I’ve tried because the egg/tortilla proportion was on point and the dish wasn’t overpowered by a bready flavor.

My friend and I also decided to split an order of the Sweet Potato Tater Tots. They were good, and tasted great dipped in the ranch, but inside the fried exterior, it was a little bit mushy instead of the shredded tot texture that I was used to.

Even though I was skeptical to try XS because of their wide range of options, I’m glad I made the decision to try it because we absolutely loved everything. I went back at a later date and enjoyed some of their sushi and dinner options, read my review of dinner at XS.

XS is located at 1307 N Charles St., in Mount Vernon.
