Canton: Tavern on The Square

Update: Tavern on the Square is now closed.

I don’t head over to Canton nearly as often as I should. For brunch one morning, some friends and I decided to meet up at Tavern on the Square in Canton. I had been there before for dinner and they have some great sandwiches so I was looking forward to trying their brunch options.

At Tavern on the Square, in addition to their brunch menu, they also offer their regular menu which is great because there are so many options!

We were seated right away which was awesome and we put in two appetizer orders right away. As a table we decided to share the Bursting Onion. It was served with spicy ranch, the spicy ranch just tasted like ranch with some hot sauce mixed in, it was nothing special. The outside of the onion was nice and crispy and evenly fried, however the middle pieces were a little bit soggy and undercooked. It maybe would have been better with a few more minutes in the fryer.

We also decided to share an order of the Fried Guacamole and Chips. This was an interesting dish that we all liked a lot. And it was different than other things we had seen on menus.

One of my friends ordered the Breakfast Skillet which was potatoes, bacon and cheese with eggs layered on top. I’ve had an awesome breakfast skillet before at The Point in Fells, this was not that. This dish was hands down the oiliest egg dish I’ve ever seen before and in fact it was inedible due to the grease factor. The fried items we ordered before this were less oily.

One of my other friends decided to order the Roast Beef Grinder. It was roast beef, balsamic onions, cheese and horseradish cream. My friend really enjoyed this sandwich, but said it was nothing special and probably wouldn’t order it again.

Another friend tried the Chicken Fajita Wrap. She loved this. It was nothing special, grilled chicken, peppers, onions and cheese with salsa on the side. But the flavors combined very well and was probably the best thing that anyone in our group ordered.

My favorite type of meat is Bison, and recently I’ve really been into cheesesteaks (Brewers Cask and No Idea to name a few). But when I saw a Bison ‘Philly’ Cheesesteak on the menu, I knew it would be exactly what I wanted. The roll was loaded with bison, onion, peppers and cheese wiz. This was awesome and one of the better cheesesteaks I’ve had. It was definitely comparable to the awesome one at Brewers Cask.

Each of the sandwiches came with a side of Fries. The fries were really awesome and a little different than your standard french fry.

In terms of the brunch options at Tavern on the Square, we were unimpressed. However the sandwiches were pretty great and I can’t wait to head back over to Canton to try some more of their great options.
