Date Night

Fells Point: Barcocina

A few months ago, Barcocina opened up in Fells Point and I’ve been dying to try it. The restaurant is on the harbor and offers beautiful views of the water which makes it an ideal dining destination. When my friend and I walked in, we were immediately seated. It was 5:30 on a Monday and unsurprisingly, Barcocina was fairly empty. I had heard plenty of good things about their drinks but neither of us was particularly in the mood for a drink so we stuck with tacos and other traditional Mexican fare for our meal.

Barcocina is a Mexican spot, so my friend and I decided to take the traditional route and sample their tacos. Each order of tacos comes with three soft tacos and you can mix and match any of the varieties offered. My friend wasn’t feeling too adventurous and ordered three steak tacos. However I wanted to get a better feel of their menu and ordered a Buffalo Chicken Taco, a Steak Taco and a Ahi Tuna Taco.

From left to right, the Ahi Tuna Taco was okay. Inside the taco was ahi tuna, pickled green papaya, yuzu crema, onion sprouts and kimchi salsa. The fish didn’t taste as fresh as ahi tuna you would find in a sushi spot. Which was a little bit of an issue for me because, no one enjoys fishy tasting tuna and if it’s not fresh, this could pose an issue.

Next was the Buffalo Chicken Taco, inside was ‘buffalo chicken’ shredded green mango & napa cabbage, smoked cheddar, onion sprouts and salsa de arbol. The waiter mentioned that this taco was spicy. Spicy is hardly the word I would use to describe this, it was bland and more flavor could have easily been added to this dish.

And lastly was the Steak Taco, inside was Grilled Steak, roasted garlic black bean smoked gouda puree, onion sprouts and salsa roja. The black bean puree was delicious, but the steak in this taco was warm (not hot) and the meat tasted dried out as if it sat under a heat lamp before it was served to us. My friend felt the same way about all three of her steak tacos.

We also ordered a side of the Elotes. Hands down this was the highlight of the meal. The corn came with ancho cayenne butter, queso fresco and lime zest. This was easily the highlight of our meal and some of the better Mexican Street Corn I’ve had in Baltimore. The corn packed a nice amount of heat which was balanced by some of the other flavors in the dish.

Overall, the food at Barcocina was a little disappointing and I don’t know if I would be fast to return there unless it was for chips, salsa and drinks.
