A few months ago, Barcocina opened up in Fells Point and I’ve been dying to try it. The restaurant is on the harbor and offers beautiful views of the water which makes it an ideal dining destination. When my friend and I walked in, we were immediately seated. It was 5:30 on a Monday and unsurprisingly, Barcocina was fairly empty. I had heard plenty of good things about their drinks but neither of us was particularly in the mood for a drink so we stuck with tacos and other traditional Mexican fare for our meal.
Barcocina is a Mexican spot, so my friend and I decided to take the traditional route and sample their tacos. Each order of tacos comes with three soft tacos and you can mix and match any of the varieties offered. My friend wasn’t feeling too adventurous and ordered three steak tacos. However I wanted to get a better feel of their menu and ordered a Buffalo Chicken Taco, a Steak Taco and a Ahi Tuna Taco.
From left to right, the Ahi Tuna Taco was okay. Inside the taco was ahi tuna, pickled green papaya, yuzu crema, onion sprouts and kimchi salsa. The fish didn’t taste as fresh as ahi tuna you would find in a sushi spot. Which was a little bit of an issue for me because, no one enjoys fishy tasting tuna and if it’s not fresh, this could pose an issue.
Next was the Buffalo Chicken Taco, inside was ‘buffalo chicken’ shredded green mango & napa cabbage, smoked cheddar, onion sprouts and salsa de arbol. The waiter mentioned that this taco was spicy. Spicy is hardly the word I would use to describe this, it was bland and more flavor could have easily been added to this dish.
