For dinner, a friend and I wanted to try something different than our usual favorites and we were planning on heading outside of the city. I had heard good things about Honey Pig in Howard County and neither of us were familiar with Korean BBQ so we figured we would check it out. I also remembered seeing a LivingSocial deal for Honey Pig which we bought that saved us $14. When we walked in around 8pm on a Saturday evening, Honey Pig was packed, there was a 20 minute wait which wasn’t bad at all. Even when we left Honey Pig probably around 10:30 there was still a wait to be seated.

When we were seated, our table had a bunch of sides to use with our Korean BBQ. There was a sauce, jalapeños, a bean paste, kimchi, lettuce and more. This was my first time having Korean BBQ so I was a little confused about how to incorporate all of the sides into my dish.

My friend and I decided to share two dishes, we started with the Bulgogi.  One of the features of Korean BBQ is they cook the meat in front of you, similar to hibacchi but without all of the bells and whistles. Bulgogi is thinly sliced, grilled marinated beef.

When the Bulgogi came off the grill it was steaming. My friend and I were each served a large portion of meat. I ended up mixing this with my rice and one of the sauces. I thought the meat was incredibly tender but lacking in some flavor, that possibly could have had something to do with my unfamiliarity with Korean BBQ.

My friend and I also shared the Chicken with Fried Rice. Again we watched as this dish was cooked in front of us.

The Chicken Fried Rice wasn’t like the Chinese version I’ve had. The flavors in this dish were reminiscent of green tea, which wasn’t good or bad, it was just different from what I had experienced in the past. But I really enjoyed this dish.

Lastly, we ordered a Kimchi Pancake. This was my favorite part of the meal, the pancake was light and fluffy and had some kimchi inside of it which gave it a nice flavor. If you’re heading over to Honey Pig, make sure to order this!

My first experience with Korean BBQ was definitely a good one and I can’t wait to try more of it.
