Inner Harbor: Family Meal

Update – Family Meal is now closed.

In Baltimore, the Inner Harbor is a giant tourist trap. Fortunately Bryan Voltaggio (a Top Chef finalist from season 6) is looking to change that with the opening of Family Meal in the Harbor.

A friend and I were looking to go someplace new for dinner, so we decided to try the newly opened Family Meal in the Harbor. The atmosphere reminded me of Shoo-Fly Diner with the reclaimed wood and rustic feel.

When we were looking over the menu, everything looked delicious so we each decided to start with a soup. My friend went with the Creamy Asparagus Soup. My friend really loved the soup and said the ingredients were all very fresh.

French onion soup, is possibly my favorite soup. So when I saw a Beef and Onion Soup on the menu, I knew I had to try it. The soup was very hearty. There were caramelized onions, chunks of braised short rib, and croutons which was then topped with melted cheese which really just made this soup insanely delicious.

For our main courses, my friend decided to order the Meatloaf. The Meatloaf came with mushroom gravy, everything mashed poatatoes, garlicky spinach. I usually shy away from ordering meatloaf for fear that it will be dry. Similarly to the meatloaf at Bookmakers, this was insanely moist and packed with flavor.

The Mashed Potatoes that came with the meatloaf were by far the best mashed potatoes either of us have ever had. They were perfectly mashed into an almost creamy texture. They were delicious.

For my main course, I went with the Eggplant Parm. It was topped with pomodoro and came with broccoli rabe and pasta. The eggplant was insanely fresh and not overly fried so this dish didn’t seem too heavy paired with the soup I had.

We also shared the Smith Island Cake which is yellow butter cake, chocolate fudge frosting, and whipped cream. As a dessert, this was pretty straight forward dish. It was very good and a great way to end our meal.
