When I found out that the executive chef from one of my favorite restaurants, Food Market, is also the executive chef for City Cafe in Mount Vernon, I knew I had to try it. My friend, Kori is also a Chad Gauss fan and was looking forward to dinner.
We started with an order of the Smokey Edamame which was topped with chipotle dust and lime salt. These were pretty good, a little on the spicy side but that’s the way I like it.
My friend loves Steak Frites, so of course she ordered that. The dish came with a flat iron steak, truffle fries, steamed string beans, and City Cafe steak sauce. The dish was good, nothing special. The steak frites at The Food Market are better.
Nothing on the entree portion of the menu really stood out to me, so I ordered two items off of the ‘First Bites’ menu. The first of the two items I ordered was the Truffle & Porcini Ravioli. The ravioli was delicious, you could tell the pasta was homemade. The sauce was incredibly creamy and the ravioli was topped with toasted parmesan cheese and fried sage which added a nice crunch. This was awesome.
The other dish I ordered was the 2 Piece Lamb Chop, this was delicious. The two lamb chops were rubbed with dark chocolate and coffee in a bourbon glaze. This was also delicious.
Dessert is normally an afterthought, but City Cafe had Taharka Brothers Ice Cream so my friend and I were easily swayed. The dessert came with three ice cream cones that were sitting in a bed of crushed oreos. Taharka Bros. ice cream is great, of course the dessert was a winner.
