American Food

Top Five: Burger Edition

Hamburgers are one of those truly American foods. You find them on plenty of restaurant menus, so of course I have my personal top five. But not all burgers the same. Sometimes restaurants put burgers on a menu, simply to satisfy the masses and you end up with something completely underwhelming. A great burger has a bun that can hold the weight of the patty and the toppings, a juicy patty, and toppings that combine to give you a wonderful bite. Without further ado, I present you with my five favorite burgers in Baltimore, in no particular order.

  1. Crosstown Burger – Hamilton Tavern

Hamilton Tavern is in, you guessed it, Hamilton! And pretty widely known for being the best burger in Baltimore. The hamburger is topped with lettuce, tomato, onion, and horseradish cheddar. But what really elevates this burger, is the sticky spicy bacon. Not every burger needs bacon, but if you skip the bacon on this burger, you’re really missing out!

Hamilton Tavern is located at 5517 Harford Rd

  1. Farmhouse Lamb Burger – Koopers Tavern

If you’re looking to build a burger, this Fells Point spot does have a pretty expansive menu with plenty of great toppings. However, when I visit, I trust the experts at Koopers and always order off the menu. The farmhouse lamb burger is my personal favorite because the lamb patty is topped with garlic herbed butter, feta cheese, and truffle arugula.  The burger is packed with flavor and easily my go-to in Fells.

Koopers Tavern is located at 1702 Thames St

  1. The Smoke Burger – Alewife

Alewife was recently on Diners, Drive-ins, & Dives – why Guy failed to talk about the smokehouse burger is beyond me. The juicy burger comes topped with smoked gouda, gruyere, bacon, caramelized onion, and chipotle aioli. I’m a huge fan of these smoky flavors so throwing them onto a burger is an easy recipe for success in my opinion.

Alewife is located at 21 North Eutaw Street

  1. French Quarter Burger – Owl Bar

In Mount Vernon, sandwiched between a pretzel roll is one of my favorite burgers. The juicy patty is topped with port wine onions, goat cheese, lettuce, and tomato and it walks the perfect line between tangy and sweet. The patty isn’t too thick, which also makes it reasonable to take a bite out of.

The Owl Bar  is located at 1 E Chase St.

  1. Bordeaux Burger – Myth and Moonshine

This burger in Canton is cast iron seared, so of course it has a nice crust on the patty but stayed very juicy. The toppings include cheddar jack cheese, a tomato slice, and most importantly, the southern slaw which gave it a wonderful crunch. The patty was also a medium thickness and everything worked perfectly together.

Myth and Moonshine is located at 2300 Boston St.
