The Fells Point Farmers Market favorite, Ekiben opened up a brick and mortar shop in Fells Point and I couldn’t be happier. Last summer I regularly made it a point to head over to the Farmers Market and have one of their delicious rice bowls. Being able to consistently grab a bowl or bun whenever the crave strikes is an absolute game changer. Especially because I can now walk over for lunch basically every day.

Ekiben is set up so you order at the counter and then take a seat which works perfectly with their small menu. There are four protein options and you can have them on either a steamed bun (bao) or in a rice bowl.

I have had The Original as a rice bowl before and I loved it, so I opted to order The Original Bun. The steamed bun was topped with two Thai chicken meatballs, coconut sauce, shredded papaya, garlic, fried shallots, and herbs. Each bite of the bun was a party in my mouth. It was absolutely delicious.

To accompany the bun, I ordered a side of Tempura Broccoli. Broccoli isn’t my vegetable of choice, ever, but the fresh herbs, red onions, and rice vinegar combination was freaking awesome. This is probably the best broccoli I’ve ever had, sorry Mom! It wasn’t overly fried which was nice, but the tempura flakes added a nice crunch.

Because everything was so delicious, I returned to Ekiben a few weeks later with my foodie pal, The Baltimore Food Journal. This time I tried the Roasted Broccoli which is the same dish except not tempura fried, and while it was very good, I prefer the tempura rendition. The main difference for me was that the tempura version was served warm and I preferred that.

On my second trip, I ordered the special bun, The Big Moooo. This was another flavor bomb stuffed with slow cooked shredded beef brisket, soy mirin gravy, roasted onions, and roasted shallots. I loved this and hope it becomes a permanent fixture on the menu. The beef was tender and it was also packed with flavor.

I honestly couldn’t tell you what my favorite thing on the menu was because everything was beyond delicious and packed with flavor. In Fells Point and looking for the best steamed buns in Baltimore? Head over to Ekiben and prepare for your taste buds to explode with flavor!
