Whenever I visit my parents on Long Island, we make sure to grab some sushi. It’s a family and we love sharing a few different rolls. I really only eat tuna and salmon, the rest of my immediate family is the same way so there’s no feeling guilty about any dietary restrictions. My parents favorite spot of the moment is Arata, it’s in the town of Syosset and I think they’re there at least once a week – it’s that good.

Arata
Before I headed back to Baltimore on my most recent visit, my parents and I took a quick pit stop for sushi and the dishes at Arata are so imaginative. I can’t wait to go back. We started the meal with the Crispy Kale Special and it was unreal. There was a thin piece of bread layered with spicy tuna and avocado then topped with crispy kale, some serrano peppers, and spicy sauce. This was some of the crispiest kale I’ve ever had and the light crunch gave the dish some much needed texture.

We also shared the Salmon Carpaccio which was another dish that we could not get enough of. The Salmon sashimi was served over a bed of greens and tomatoes with golden raisins, shaved almonds, and topped with a truffle dressing. Again, the combination isn’t your traditional sushi but the chefs at Arata really know their way around a piece of fish and blew me away.

We also ordered the Maguro Invictus and the Love Roll. The Maguro Invictus was a play on a spicy tuna roll topped with edamame puree. And the Love Roll was spicy crunchy tuna, topped with seared tuna and salmon, and then topped with a yuzu dressed salad. These rolls were also winners.

I can’t wait until next time I visit my parents and we try the rest of the menu at Arata!
