A few weeks ago, a day trip brought me to Richmond and I was more than thrilled to be tasting delicious food in a new city. When I was combing through Yelp and Foursquare for the best places to grab a bite, I came across two bakeries that looked like I couldn’t visit the city without checking out. Carbs – specifically pastries – are my weakness so I wanted to make sure I visited the two best in the area.

First up on my pastry tour was Sub Rosa Bakery in Church Hill (620 N 25th St | Richmond, VA). All of the breads and pastries coming out of this bakery are made in a wood fired oven. It can get a little toasty inside, but trust me it’s worth it. I ordered a Croissant that was so flaky and buttery. I don’t think I’ll ever have a croissant again that compares to this. Writing this now has me dreaming about driving back down to Richmond to order a dozen to go. This was fantastic.

There’s also a super-cute store next to Sub Rosa called Dear Neighbor (2415 Jefferson Ave | Richmond, VA) that’s totally worth checking out! I had to stop myself from buying all of the jewelry.

I also made it a point to stop at Whisk in Shockoe Bottom (2100 E Main St | Richmond, VA). I had heard that they had macaron ice cream sandwiches which they had unfortunately sold out of by the time I got there. Of course, that doesn’t mean I left empty handed! The macarons are definitely on the larger size so my friend and I opted to share a fig one and it totally satisfied our sweets cravings.
