After years of successfully operating fast casual Mediterranean kiosks downtown,Maria Kaimakis and Vassos Yiannouris opened up a full service restaurant in Roland Park. Cypriana has been open just over a year serving all of the menu favorites and more. I had the chance to visit earlier this week with a friend and I was in love with everything I had a chance to try.

We started with the Salad Sampler with Pita. The pita was served fresh out of the oven, piping hot and beyond delicious. It was probably some of the best pita I’ve had. Of the salads I tried, my favorite was the cucumber yogurt and the carrots and pine nuts. But all were so tasty and had different flavor profiles – sure to be a crowd pleaser!

Because of course we needed to try the hummus, we opted for the warm version, Hummus of Constantinopl. It’s baked in the cast iron crock and topped with butter and fresh parsley. It’s smooth and creamy and beyond delicious when you swipe the warm pita through it. This will be one of those dishes I have to order when I visit Cypriana.

Mousaka is one of my favorite Mediterranean dishes, so of course I ordered Chef Maria’s version. I’m drooling just thinking about it. The eggplant, zucchini, and potatoes are grilled and layered with ground beef and lamb, then topped with some of the creamiest béchamel sauce I’ve ever had. We could not get enough of this dish. Good thing it’s a small portion though because it was super rich and dreamy.

We also tried the Spinach and Cheese Pies. These were traditional Greek Spanakopites and Tyropites. I’m a huge spinach pie fan and this hit all the right notes. The filo dough was flaky and buttery and the spinach was super creamy. The cheese pies had the same delicious dough. Of the two, I think I preferred the spinach which was perfect because my friend preferred the cheese.

After all the apps we ordered, we decided it was best to split an entrée and decided on the Chicken Tenderloin. Chef Maria makes all of the dressings in house, so I was really drawn to the tarragon dressing. I could not stop dipping the juicy grilled chicken in the dressing. It was another great bite.

Because everything else was so good we couldn’t pass up the chance to order dessert. Our waiter recommended the Loukoumades and they were delicious. Each doughnut was drizzled with honey and we could not get enough of this dish.

Everything we ordered was so delicious, I can’t wait to come back and try the rest of the menu.
