Dining at King’s Arms Tavern: A Colonial Williamsburg Culinary Experience

While exploring Colonial Williamsburg, my mom and I wanted to enjoy another truly colonial dining experience, so we decided to try King’s Arms Tavern. Conveniently located within the Historical City limits, it’s just a short walk from Josiah Chowning’s Tavern.

The atmosphere at King’s Arms Tavern immediately transports you back in time. There are no modern light fixtures—each table is illuminated by a candle, and wall-mounted candle holders add to the authentic colonial ambiance.

For her meal, my mom chose Mrs. Vobe’s Tavern Dinner, which offers a sampler of colonial favorites, including a soup, half a Cornish game hen, and a dessert. We were both intrigued by the Peanut Soupe and decided to share it. According to our waitress, in the 18th century peanuts were often used as a protein source when fresh meat wasn’t available. The soup was creamy yet thinner than traditional peanut butter, and dipping the freshly toasted bread into it reminded me of a deconstructed peanut butter sandwich—perfect for a peanut lover like me.

The Cornish Game Hen was equally impressive. The meat was juicy, and the skin perfectly crispy—a true delight for any poultry enthusiast.

For my entree, I opted for the Queen Cut Prime Rib of Beef. This dish was the ultimate comfort meal: the beef was cooked medium-rare, paired with buttery popovers (seriously, this popover alone is worth the visit), crispy green beans, and roasted potatoes. Each bite was a perfect blend of classic flavors and hearty colonial fare.

To finish off our meal, we enjoyed a scoop of lemon sorbet. Refreshing and tangy, it was the ideal light dessert to round out a satisfying meal—especially as we prepared to head out on a Colonial Ghost Tour later that evening.

The ghost tour was a perfect complement to dinner, just a five-minute walk from the tavern, and added an extra layer of historic charm to our evening.
