Spicy Szechuan Dishes at Szechuan Impression in Alhambra

California is known for having some of the best Asian food in the United States, and when planning my trip I knew I wanted to find a standout spot to try while I was there. After doing some research and asking around, one restaurant kept coming up again and again: Szechuan Impression in Alhambra.

The restaurant is located in the San Gabriel Valley, an area just outside Los Angeles that’s famous for its incredible Chinese food scene. It’s a bit of a drive from many parts of LA, but for anyone who enjoys bold Szechuan flavors, it’s absolutely worth it.

Quick Guide to Szechuan Impression

Location: Alhambra, California (San Gabriel Valley)
Cuisine: Szechuan Chinese
Known for: bold spice, peppercorn heat, and shareable dishes
What to try: cold noodles, toothpick lamb, spicy chicken, wontons

When my friend and I arrived, the menu was packed with dishes that sounded amazing. Instead of narrowing it down too much, we decided to share several plates so we could try a little bit of everything. It ended up being a lot of food, but leftovers are never a bad thing.

Impressive Cold Noodles

We started the meal with the Impressive Cold Noodles, which turned out to be a great way to begin.

Even though the dish had some spice, the noodles were served cold, which helped balance things out before moving on to some of the hotter dishes. The egg noodles were topped with bean sprouts, crushed peanuts, scallions, and a fragrant peppercorn sauce.

It was the kind of dish where each bite had a mix of texture and flavor—crunchy, nutty, and slightly spicy.

Wok-Fried Chicken with Rattan Pepper

The spiciest dish we ordered was the Wok-Fried Free Range Chicken with Rattan Pepper.

When we ordered it, our server double-checked that we were ready for the heat. The menu marked it with three peppers, which turned out to be pretty accurate.

The chicken was juicy and coated in a sauce packed with Szechuan peppercorn flavor. It was definitely spicy, but not so intense that we couldn’t enjoy it. We just needed to pause for a sip of water every few bites.

Street Corner Potato Strips

Since I’m always drawn to fries on a menu, we also ordered the Street Corner Potato Strips.

These crispy fries were tossed with chili powder, Szechuan peppercorns, cilantro, and scallions. The seasoning gave them a bold flavor that worked well with the rest of the dishes on the table. The only thing I found myself wishing for was a dipping sauce on the side.

Toothpick Mutton

The standout dish of the night was easily the Toothpick Mutton.

Small pieces of lamb were skewered on toothpicks and fried until crispy. The outside had just enough crunch while the inside stayed tender and flavorful. With a mix of spice and seasoning, it quickly became everyone’s favorite dish at the table.

If you visit Szechuan Impression, this is definitely one dish I’d recommend ordering.

Wontons in Chicken Broth

The final dish we tried was Wontons in Chicken Broth.

After several spicy plates, the warm broth felt especially comforting. The wontons were filled with minced pork, and the broth had a rich, savory flavor that made it easy to finish the entire bowl.

Exploring the San Gabriel Valley Food Scene

Eating at Szechuan Impression was a reminder of how incredible the San Gabriel Valley Chinese food scene really is. The restaurant was lively, the dishes were packed with flavor, and every plate that arrived at the table made us curious about what else was on the menu.

If you’re exploring the food scene around Los Angeles and enjoy Szechuan cuisine, Alhambra is definitely worth adding to your list of places to visit.

Szechuan Impression is located at 1900 W Valley Blvd, Alhambra, CA
