Brunch at Gertrude’s Inside the BMA: Art Meets Comfort Food

If you love brunch (and let’s be real — who doesn’t?), Gertrude’s inside the Baltimore Museum of Art is one of those must-visit spots in Charles Village. It’s constantly topping “Best Brunch in Baltimore” lists, so my roommate and I decided to see what all the hype was about.

We made a plan to check out some art at the BMA, then grab brunch afterward — the perfect weekend combo. Thankfully, we booked a reservation on OpenTable, which was definitely the move because when we got there, plenty of people were still waiting to be seated.

Gertrude’s has this cozy, slightly upscale vibe — you can tell right away it’s a local favorite. Our waiter mentioned that they make their sodas in-house, which instantly caught our attention. I went for the Grapefruit Soda, while my roommate tried the Blood Orange Soda. Both were refreshing, perfectly balanced, and not too sweet — definitely better than your average brunch drink.

My roommate was in the mood for something savory, so she ordered Miss Jean’s Maryland Crab Soup — a red, tomato-based vegetable soup loaded with fresh lump crabmeat. She loved it, and honestly, I don’t blame her. It’s classic Maryland comfort food done right.

She also grabbed a side of French fries, which were good but nothing special — definitely more of a “snack on while chatting” situation than a standout dish.

As for me, I couldn’t resist the Buttermilk Waffles. They came with three light, fluffy waffles topped with a drizzle of caramel sauce, plus whipped cream and maple syrup on the side. I was a little nervous the caramel might overpower everything, but it was just right — sweet, buttery, and balanced. If you’re a waffle lover, trust me, order these.

Between the art, the vibe, and the food, Gertrude’s totally lived up to the hype. It’s the kind of place where you can linger over brunch and feel fancy but still comfortable. Next time, I’m planning to come back for their crab cakes — I’ve heard they’re incredible.
