Before catching a movie at The Charles Theater, my girlfriend and I wanted a quick bite. While there are several excellent options nearby — like Bottega and Pen & Quill — we decided on Tapas Teatro. Since we weren’t super hungry, a few small plates sounded perfect. Bonus tip: Tapas Teatro lets you bring drinks into the theater!

On my first visit over the summer, I discovered that Tapas Teatro has an entire Gin & Tonic menu. Of the five options available, we tried the Alegria and Tonic #1. The Alegria was citrus-forward and bursting with refreshing grapefruit, while the Tonic #1 was a clean, expertly crafted classic with a twist of lemon and juniper berries.

Taking our waitress’s advice, we started with the Pisto Manchego, a Spanish ratatouille with zucchini and squash in a thin red sauce, topped with pine nuts. Every bite was perfectly balanced and full of flavor.

Next, we tried the Hipogloso Chamuscado, a special that evening. The pan-seared halibut was tender and flavorful, served over sautéed chickpeas and chorizo in a tomato-caper sauce. This ended up being my girlfriend’s favorite dish — the chickpeas and chorizo combination was irresistible, and we cleaned the plate.

For our final savory course, we ordered the Bistec a la Brasa. The steak was cooked to perfection with a beautiful sear, juicy interior, and some of the best steak I’ve had in recent memory.

To finish, we shared the Criollo, a milk chocolate mousse encased in a chocolate shell. Creamy, rich, and indulgent — it was the perfect sweet ending to our meal.
