My drink of choice is usually beer, so a brewery that also serves great food is always going to catch my attention. That’s exactly what makes Bluejacket in the Navy Yard neighborhood of Washington, DC such a fun place to spend an evening.
The brewery has a big, open industrial space that still manages to feel warm and inviting. Between the rotating draft list and a menu full of shareable plates, it’s easy to settle in for a while.

Sampling the Beers
Whenever I visit a brewery for the first time, I almost always start with a beer flight. It’s the easiest way to explore what they’re brewing and figure out what styles stand out.
During this visit I ended up sampling ten of Bluejacket’s beers, and three quickly rose to the top for me:
-
The Jam
-
Goldfinch
-
Shaking Through
The beer list rotates frequently, which means there’s always something new to try. Whether you prefer light and crisp beers or something darker and richer, Bluejacket usually has something for every palate.

Starting with Pretzels
My friend and I decided to share a few dishes so we could try more of the menu, and the first thing that caught our attention was the Fresh Baked Everything Pretzels.
The pretzels were incredibly soft and warm, but what really made the dish shine were the dipping sauces. The beer cheese and beer mustard added the perfect salty and tangy contrast.

The Crab Pretzel
Of course, when you see something called a Crab Pretzel, it’s hard not to order it—especially when you’re someone who spends a lot of time eating Maryland crab.
The soft pretzel came loaded with a rich, cheesy crab topping that felt wonderfully indulgent. It’s the kind of dish that’s messy in the best possible way.

Pan-Seared Pierogies
Our server suggested the Pan-Seared Pierogies, and I’m so glad we took her recommendation.
The pierogies were filled with boursin cheese and onions, then topped with crispy leeks and mushrooms and finished with a chive reduction. Every bite had layers of flavor—creamy cheese, earthy mushrooms, and that bright chive sauce tying everything together.
Looking back, this might have been the standout dish of the night.

Rare Roast Beef Sandwich
For our final savory dish, we went with the Rare Roast Beef Sandwich.
The sandwich came on a poppy seed bun spread with horseradish mayo, beer cheese, fried shallots, and thin slices of rare roast beef. It had everything I look for in a sandwich—rich flavor, just enough sauce, and bread that actually holds everything together.
And on the side? House-made tater tots, which are absolutely worth ordering whenever you visit Bluejacket.

Saving Room for Dessert
Even after all of that food, we somehow saved room for dessert.
The Caramel Soft Serve Sundae was a swirl of chocolate and caramel soft serve topped with caramelized bananas, chocolate pearls, and hazelnut brittle.
The soft serve itself was lighter than traditional ice cream, which made the whole dessert feel a little less heavy and the perfect way to end the meal.
