As someone who was born and raised in New York, I’ve always had high standards when it comes to delis. Since moving to Baltimore, I’ve heard countless people rave about Attman’s Deli in Jonestown, located on the city’s famous Corned Beef Row. This block is legendary for its old-school deli fare — stacked sandwiches, tender pastrami, and all the nostalgic flavors you’d expect from a classic Jewish deli.
So, on a recent Saturday when I was craving a seriously good sandwich, I finally decided it was time to see what all the fuss was about.
From the outside, Attman’s Deli looks exactly like the kind of place I grew up with in New York — a no-frills, old-fashioned deli with character written all over it. The moment you step inside, you’re hit with the unmistakable aroma of fresh rye bread, sizzling corned beef, and briny pickles. It’s the kind of smell that makes you instantly hungry.
After a few minutes in line (and a lot of indecision — everything looked incredible), I went with the Cloak and Dagger, one of Attman’s most popular sandwiches. It’s piled high with tender corned beef, creamy coleslaw, and Russian dressing on fresh rye bread.
The corned beef was perfectly seasoned — juicy, not overly salty, and cut just right. The coleslaw added a refreshing crunch and a little sweetness that balanced the richness of the meat. It was messy, satisfying, and absolutely delicious — the kind of sandwich that requires a pile of napkins and zero regrets.
Hands down, this was the most authentic deli experience I’ve had since leaving New York.
If you’re craving a true New York-style deli sandwich without leaving Baltimore, Attman’s Deli is a must-visit. It’s packed with history, flavor, and that unmistakable neighborhood charm that makes it a Baltimore institution.
Attman’s Deli is located at 1019 E Lombard St, in Jonestown.
