Eggs are one of my favorite breakfast foods — especially when they’re prepared in a fun, flavorful way instead of the standard scrambled or over-easy style. One weekend morning, I found myself craving shakshuka, even though I had never actually tried it before. After a quick search on Foursquare, I saw that SoBo Cafe in Federal Hill served it, which was perfect since I’d been meaning to try this cozy neighborhood spot for ages.
My roommate was immediately on board for brunch, so we headed over to SoBo Cafe.
We arrived around 2:30 PM on a Sunday, and the restaurant was nearly empty — which initially made me nervous. But it turns out they close at 3 PM before reopening for dinner, so it all made sense. The relaxed atmosphere was actually nice for a late brunch.
Unfortunately, because we came near closing, SoBo Cafe was already sold out of their famous Cinnamon Buns (a good sign, honestly). I made a mental note to return earlier next time just for those.
I stuck with my plan and ordered the Shakshuka — two poached eggs nestled in a chunky tomato sauce with feta, served with toast, home fries, and fruit. The sauce was rich and flavorful, the eggs were perfectly poached, and the feta added just the right amount of saltiness. I used the toast to scoop up every last bit of yolk and tomato — pure brunch perfection.
My roommate ordered the Mac-n-Cheese, and honestly, it might be one of the best in Baltimore. It came topped with chopped tomatoes, gooey cheddar, and a crispy crumb topping. The portion was huge, and the dish was decadent, cheesy, and incredibly satisfying. I’ve been to restaurants that specialize in mac-n-cheese, and even they don’t compare to SoBo Cafe’s version.
We also noticed they offer sangria popsicles, which sound like the ultimate summer treat — something I’ll definitely try on my next visit.
Everything we ordered at SoBo Cafe was delicious, from the comforting shakshuka to the unforgettable mac-n-cheese. It’s cozy, low-key, and the perfect brunch spot in Federal Hill for anyone who loves elevated comfort food in a relaxed setting.
SoBo Cafe is located at 6 W. Cross St. in Fed Hill.
