I love a great sandwich—but a truly great sandwich requires the perfect balance of flavors and textures. In my opinion, the ideal sandwich includes crusty bread, something salty, something creamy, a little acidity, and just a bit of heat.
One place in Baltimore that consistently delivers on that balance is Pitango Bakery + Cafe in Fells Point. This waterfront café and bakery has been a neighborhood favorite for years, and I love stopping in whenever I get the chance.
The space itself is bright and open, and it’s located right along the water in Fells Point. On a nice day, sitting outside with a coffee, sandwich, or pastry is one of the best ways to enjoy the neighborhood. It’s easily one of those Baltimore restaurants that combines great food with a great location.

Starting with Mint Lemonade
I stopped in for dinner after work and kicked things off with a fresh mint lemonade.
It was incredibly refreshing and the perfect drink after a long day. The bright citrus flavor combined with the fresh mint made it light, crisp, and a great start to the meal.

Build-Your-Own Sandwich on Fresh Focaccia
For dinner, I decided to build my own sandwich, which is always a great option when you want to customize flavors exactly the way you like them.
All of the bread at Pitango is made in-house daily, and the focaccia immediately caught my eye.
I topped my sandwich with:
-
Creamy avocado
-
Shishito peppers
-
Prosciutto di Parma
The avocado added richness, the prosciutto provided that salty bite, and the shishito peppers brought a subtle heat that tied everything together. Combined with the fresh focaccia, it made for an incredibly satisfying sandwich.
Honestly, I’m getting hungry just thinking about it again.

Classic Caprese Sandwich
My friend ordered the Caprese Sandwich, a classic Italian combination of:
-
Fresh mozzarella
-
Tomato
-
Basil
-
Olive oil
This sandwich was served on ciabatta bread, which was perfectly crisp on the outside and soft inside. The ingredients were incredibly fresh, and the simplicity of the flavors really let each component shine.
If you’re visiting Pitango for lunch or dinner, the Caprese is another must-order sandwich.

Don’t Skip Dessert: The Cruffin
Of course, no meal is complete without dessert.
We ordered two cruffins to share. If you’ve never had one before, a cruffin is a hybrid of a croissant and a muffin, typically filled with custard.
Pitango’s version was buttery, flaky, and perfectly sweet. The layers were light and crisp like a croissant, while the custard filling added just the right amount of richness.
It’s absolutely worth ordering whenever you visit.
