Ekiben in Fells Point: From Farmers Market Favorite to Brick & Mortar Must-Try

Update: Ekiben has opened a brick and mortar location and can now be found at 1622 Eastern Avenue.

If you’ve ever spent a Saturday morning wandering through the Fells Point Farmers Market, chances are you’ve seen the line forming at Ekiben’s stand. Known for their flavorful rice bowls and bao (steamed bun sandwiches), Ekiben has been a must-visit for years.

Fun fact: “Ekiben” actually refers to a type of bento box meal traditionally sold at train stations in Japan and Taiwan — quick, comforting, and packed with flavor.

The menu at Ekiben keeps things simple — and that’s part of what makes it great. There are just a handful of protein options, and each can be served as a rice bowl or inside a soft, steamed bun.

I went with The Original Rice Bowl, which came loaded with Thai chicken meatballs, papaya slaw, fresh herbs, and roasted aromatics. Every bite was full of flavor — a little spicy, a little sweet, and perfectly balanced with the rice. It’s so good that it almost makes up for the fact that it used to only be available at the market on Saturday mornings.

Now that Ekiben has a permanent home at 1622 Eastern Avenue, you don’t have to wait for Saturday to get your fix.

Ekiben is located at the intersection of Broadway and Thames St, inFells Point.
