My Ocean Box Experience + The Best Seared Tuna I’ve Ever Made

Have you heard of Ocean Box? It’s a fresh fish delivery service that brings sustainably sourced seafood straight to your doorstep. You can customize your box, choose your delivery frequency, and enjoy restaurant-quality fish without leaving your kitchen.

I recently had the opportunity to try a box from Ocean Box, and I couldn’t have been happier with the quality. Every piece of fish arrived perfectly packed, cold, and ready to cook. For my first recipe, I went with something simple but elegant — Seared Tuna over Avocado Wasabi Purée — and it turned out beautifully.

Seared Tuna over Avocado Wasabi Puree

The fresh tuna from Ocean Box was too good to overcomplicate, so I went with Asian-inspired flavors that would complement its natural richness. The tuna is coated in sesame seeds, quickly seared, and served over a smooth avocado wasabi purée that adds the perfect punch of heat and creaminess.

I even used the leftover purée later in the week — it was amazing drizzled over grilled chicken and roasted vegetables.

Ingredients

Tuna

  • 2 Tuna Steaks Approx 8 oz. each
  • 1/2 Cup White Sesame Seeds
  • 1/2 Cup Black Sesame Seeds
  • 2 TBSP Vegetable Oil
  • Salt + Pepper to taste

Avocado Wassabi Puree (can be made up to 3 days in advance)

  • 1 Avocado
  • 4 Green Onions chopped
  • 1 Lime zested + juiced
  • 2 TBSP Wasabi adjust depending on your preferences
  • 1 TBSP Cilantro I always keep the stir-in paste in my fridge
  • 1 TBSP Ginger I always keep the stir-in paste in my fridge
  • 1/3 Cup Olive Oil
  • Salt + Pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Begin by prepping your sauce. In a small blender, combine all of the sauce ingredients and blend until smooth. Reserve one green onion for garnish.

  2. Taste the avocado wasabi puree, adjust seasonings as needed and set aside.

  3. Coat the tuna with salt and pepper on both sides.

  4. Mix the black and white sesame seeds on a plate and dredge the tuna through the seeds. Coating evenly.

  5. Heat the oil into a pan over medium-high heat.

  6. When the oil is hot (just starting to smoke), arrange the tuna in the pan and cook for about a minute on each side. Flipping when the white sesame seeds begin to turn golden.

  7. Transfer the tuna to a cutting board and slice, about half an inch thick.

  8. Arrange the tuna over a swipe of the avocado wasabi puree.

  9. Garnish with 1 chopped scallion

Recipe Notes

  • If you prefer a more thoroughly cooked tuna, leave it in the pan for a minute or two longer on each side. Depending on your preferences.
  • The avocado wasabi puree makes enough for 3-4 servings

This seared tuna was one of the freshest, most flavorful meals I’ve made at home in a long time — and knowing it came from sustainably sourced fish made it even better.

If you love cooking seafood but want the convenience of having it delivered right to your door, Ocean Box is absolutely worth trying.
