One of my favorite parts about traveling is coffee shop hopping. Exploring cafés in a new city often leads to some of the best discoveries — great coffee, unexpected snacks, and sometimes a glimpse into the local food scene.
While planning my time in Orange County, I kept seeing Portola Coffee Roasters pop up as one of the best specialty coffee spots in the area. Naturally, I had to see what the hype was about. The location in the charming town of Orange was closest to where I was staying, and it turned out to be a perfect little stop to spend the morning.

This particular Portola location sits inside Provisions Market, a small marketplace filled with food counters, coffee, and plenty of places to sit and hang out. It ended up being the kind of place where you arrive for a coffee and accidentally spend half the day.
The Flat Brown
The espresso menu offered eleven different drinks, but one immediately caught my attention: the Flat Brown.
Mostly because I had absolutely no idea what it was.
Thankfully I asked, and I’m very glad I did. The Flat Brown is essentially a flat white with a pump of chocolate fudge added in. Espresso, steamed milk, chocolate, and a silky foam layer — it was basically everything I love in a coffee drink. After the first sip, I knew this might become a new favorite.

Since Portola is located inside Provisions Market, grabbing a bite to eat was an easy decision. I arrived around 9am, so avocado toast felt like the perfect breakfast.
The thick slice of crusty sourdough was topped with creamy avocado, radishes, pickled shallots, and capers. It had a great mix of textures — creamy, salty, and just a little bit tangy. I devoured it.

An Afternoon Beer
One of the unexpected perks of hanging out in the market was the impressive beer selection. As the morning slowly turned into afternoon, coffee gave way to something a little different.
After browsing the options, I landed on The Willy from Alpine Beer Company, a pale wheat ale that was light, refreshing, and easy to sip while people-watching.

Cucumber & Avocado Sandwich
To go along with the beer, I ordered the Cucumber & Avocado Sandwich. It came stacked with avocado, lettuce, cucumber, red onion, goat cheese, and pepper jam on sourdough.
The combination worked beautifully. The creamy avocado and goat cheese were balanced by the crisp cucumbers and lettuce, while the pepper jam added just a hint of sweetness.
