Barcocina Fells Point Review: Harbor Views and Mexican Fare

A few months ago, Barcocina opened in Fells Point, and I’ve been eager to try it. The restaurant sits right on the harbor, offering beautiful views of the water—an ideal spot for casual dining. My friend and I arrived at 5:30 on a Monday, and the restaurant was fairly empty. While I’d heard great things about their drinks, neither of us was in the mood, so we stuck with tacos and other Mexican dishes.

Barcocina’s menu is taco-focused, so we decided to try a few varieties. My friend played it safe with three steak tacos, while I opted for a mix: Buffalo Chicken, Steak, and Ahi Tuna.

The Ahi Tuna Taco included pickled green papaya, yuzu crema, onion sprouts, and kimchi salsa. Unfortunately, the tuna didn’t taste as fresh as it would at a sushi spot, which was a bit of a letdown.

The Buffalo Chicken Taco featured shredded green mango and napa cabbage, smoked cheddar, onion sprouts, and salsa de arbol. While the menu described it as spicy, the taco was actually quite mild and could have used more flavor.

Finally, the Steak Taco came with grilled steak, roasted garlic black bean smoked gouda puree, onion sprouts, and salsa roja. The black bean puree was delicious, but the steak was lukewarm and slightly dry, as if it had sat under a heat lamp. My friend felt the same about her three steak tacos.

The highlight of the meal was the Elotes. The corn came with ancho cayenne butter, queso fresco, and lime zest. This dish had a perfect balance of spice and flavor and was some of the best Mexican street corn I’ve had in Baltimore.

Overall, the food at Barcocina was a bit disappointing. While the elotes are excellent, the tacos didn’t live up to expectations. I’d consider returning primarily for chips, salsa, and drinks rather than a full meal.
