Baltimore has an incredible food scene, and when it comes to Baltimore restaurants that serve great sushi, I have two personal favorites: one downtown in Fells Point and one uptown in Mount Washington.
On a recent Friday evening, a friend who lives in Owings Mills suggested we meet for sushi and sake. Chiyo Sushi in Mount Washington was the perfect spot because it’s about halfway between us. It also happens to be one of my favorite sushi spots in Baltimore.
If you’re searching for Baltimore restaurants with high-quality sushi and fresh fish, Chiyo Sushi absolutely deserves a visit.
Located in the Mount Washington neighborhood, Chiyo Sushi is known among locals for its consistently fresh fish and creative rolls. It’s one of those Baltimore restaurants that feels like a neighborhood gem—casual, welcoming, and focused on quality.
After browsing the menu, we decided to share several dishes since so many options stood out.

Chiyo
We started with the Tuna Surf Board, which looked as playful as it tasted delicious.
The dish features spicy tuna and avocado perched on top of a fried zucchini slice—almost like the fish is riding a wave. The tuna tasted incredibly fresh, the avocado was creamy, and the crispy zucchini added the perfect crunch.
It was an immediate hit at the table and a great way to kick off the meal.

Tuna Surf Board
Next, we shared a trio of sushi rolls:
-
Crunchy Tuna Roll
-
California Roll
-
Geisha Roll
The standout for me was the Crunchy Tuna Roll, which features black pepper tuna. It’s easily one of my favorite rolls at Chiyo Sushi and something I order almost every time I visit.
The Geisha Roll was topped with a fried lotus root, which added a subtle crunch and a unique texture that paired perfectly with the fresh fish. The mix of flavors and textures made this roll especially memorable.

Sushi Spread
For me, the true test of any sushi restaurant is the quality of its sashimi.
We ordered a few pieces of Maguro (tuna belly) and salmon sashimi, and both were exceptional. When sushi is served without sauces or extras, the fish has to stand on its own—and at Chiyo, it absolutely does.
The salmon was rich, buttery, and melt-in-your-mouth good. The maguro was equally impressive, with a smooth texture and clean flavor.
Personally, I’m usually more of a salmon fan than tuna, but both were outstanding and confirmed why Chiyo remains one of my favorite sushi spots among Baltimore restaurants.

Sashimi
To finish the meal, we shared an order of Strawberry Mochi.
Mochi is a chewy sticky rice dough filled with ice cream, and I almost prefer it to traditional ice cream because it’s served colder and has such a satisfying texture.
The strawberry flavor was bright and refreshing—the perfect sweet ending to a sushi dinner.

Final Thoughts on Chiyo Sushi
If you’re exploring Baltimore restaurants for sushi, Chiyo Sushi in Mount Washington should definitely be on your list. Between the fresh sashimi, creative rolls, and relaxed neighborhood vibe, it’s one of the best places in the city to enjoy a casual sushi night.
