When I visit my parents on Long Island, one of our favorite things to do together is go out for sushi. It’s something of a family tradition at this point—we order a variety of rolls and share everything around the table.
Most of us tend to stick to tuna and salmon, so there’s never much debate about what to order. Everyone enjoys the same types of fish, which makes sharing easy.
My parents’ current favorite sushi spot is Arata in Syosset, and they love it so much they seem to go at least once a week. After visiting myself, I can definitely see why.

Arata
A Creative Start: Crispy Kale Special
Before heading back to Baltimore on my most recent trip home, we stopped at Arata for a quick sushi dinner.
We started with the Crispy Kale Special, which was one of the most unique dishes of the night.
The dish featured a thin crispy base layered with spicy tuna and avocado, then topped with crispy kale, serrano peppers, and a spicy sauce. The kale was unbelievably crisp and added a great crunch that balanced the creamy tuna and avocado.
The textures in this dish were fantastic, and it was an incredibly memorable start to the meal.

Salmon Carpaccio
Next, we shared the Salmon Carpaccio, which ended up being another standout dish.
The salmon sashimi was served over a bed of greens and tomatoes, then topped with golden raisins, shaved almonds, and truffle dressing.
While this isn’t a traditional sushi preparation, the flavors worked beautifully together. The sweetness from the raisins, the nuttiness of the almonds, and the richness of the truffle dressing elevated the fresh salmon in a really interesting way.
It was clear that the chefs at Arata really know how to create imaginative dishes while still highlighting the quality of the fish.

Maguro Invictus and Love Roll
Of course, we also ordered a few sushi rolls to share.
The Maguro Invictus was a twist on a spicy tuna roll, topped with a smooth edamame purée that added a fresh, slightly creamy element to the dish.
We also tried the Love Roll, which featured spicy crunchy tuna, topped with seared tuna and salmon, and finished with a yuzu-dressed salad. The bright citrus from the yuzu added a refreshing finish that balanced the richness of the fish.
Both rolls were excellent and continued the theme of creative but well-balanced sushi.

Final Thoughts on Arata Sushi
Arata easily lives up to its reputation as one of the best sushi spots in Syosset. The menu blends traditional sushi techniques with creative flavor combinations, making every dish feel thoughtful and exciting.
I’m already looking forward to my next visit to Long Island so we can go back and explore more of the menu.
Arata is located at 18 Cold Spring Rd, Syosset
