Federal Hill

Federal Hill: Blue Agave

When you ask someone to suggest a good Mexican restaurant in Fed Hill, the first place they usually mention is Blue Agave. Personally, I have no idea why because the food is nothing special and the management is horrible, there are definitely better places just down the street. But I have some friends who were craving Mexican food and Blue Agave has $2 tacos during happy hour so my vote for better Mexican food lost (places I prefer nearby, Banditos or Miguels).

We arrived at 6:30 and I had made a reservation on OpenTable. When we were seated we asked about the happy hour specials which it turns out, are only available at the bar. When we asked to be seated in the bar area, we were informed we would lose our OpenTable points. If the restaurant was busy and there was a wait I completely understand why the restaurant would not want to give us the points or the happy hour specials. The restaurant was mostly empty. The bar area was crowded, but the actual restaurant area had maybe 5 tables occupied. After some arguing they sat us outside so we could get the happy hour specials and allowed us to keep our OpenTable points. I understand not wanting to give us the drink specials, but we came for $2 tacos.

Our server, I think his name was Brett, was wonderful; very accommodating and put our order in right away so we could get the happy hour deals we came for. We ordered a round of drinks and when they arrived the waiter brought us some chips and a trio of salsas. There’s a salsa verde, pico de gallo and roja salsa. They were each pretty good, but nothing remarkable about any of them.

We also ordered the Guacamole Fresco which was your traditional guacamole. It was very fresh and a great appetizer. Also it worked as something to put in our tacos which came later. The chips to guac ratio was a little off but the waiter happily brought us more chips free of charge.

One of my friends loves queso (I swear she goes to Banditos weekly for theirs) so she decided to see what Blue Agave had to offer. Unfortunately, this was inedible and we had to send it back. When someone says queso, you think of a cheesy dip for your chips. This was just melted cheese with a thick layer of oil over it. It wasn’t spreadable or anything, it was a bowl of melted cheese and oil, hardly what I would call a dip. The waiter said that they had recently changed their recipe, which would have been nice for him to mention when we ordered this cheesy, oily mess.

I ordered the Tortilla Soup which was delicious, it’s a blend of fresh roma tomatoes, corn tortillas, onions, peppers, and spices, I opted to add the shredded chicken for an additional $2. The soup was delicious with a nice smoky, spicy flavor and I found myself wishing I ordered the larger size. This may be one of the best tortilla soups I’ve ever had, however it is a little on the spicy side, just a warning.

Next, the tacos arrived. We each ordered between two and four tacos. Inside there was steak, chicken or fried avocados. Instead of each person getting a plate of tacos they ordered, three plates came out with the tacos grouped by protein. This was a little annoying because we were a group of five that had been drinking and we each ordered our tacos individually for a reason, but we managed to figure it out.

Each of the tacos came with the same filler of shredded cheese, diced tomatoes and lettuce.

My favorite of the tacos was by far the shredded chicken. It packed the most flavor, the steak was a little overcooked (in my opinion, I prefer my meat medium-rare, not well done.)

Although the management at Blue Agave is not very accommodating, in terms of the food (minus the nasty queso mess) it was better than I had remembered. There was nothing particular remarkable about anything we ordered besides the soup, but if you’re in the mood for great happy hour deals, their tacos are worth a shot.
