If you ask locals where to find the best pizza in Baltimore, Matthew’s Pizza in Highlandtown is bound to come up. Serving old-world deep-dish style pizza since 1943, Matthew’s has earned its place as a Baltimore institution. My friend usually gravitates toward Our House for the same style, but I convinced her to venture out to Highlandtown with me for a change of scenery.
We kicked things off with an order of Garlic Bread. Simple, classic, and always satisfying—bread with garlic and oil is hard to beat.
Next up, we shared an order of Homemade Meatballs. Each order comes with two massive, juicy meatballs smothered in tomato sauce. They were flavorful, tender, and a perfect complement to the pizza. Many reviewers recommend them as a pizza topping too, which I can see being amazing.
For the main course, we went with the Popular Pie—a classic tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese pizza. The thick crust was excellent, holding up well to the toppings, though the pizza was a little oilier than I personally prefer. Even so, it was satisfying, and I’m looking forward to trying some of Matthew’s more unique pies on my next visit.
If you’re craving old-world style pizza and Italian favorites in Baltimore, Matthew’s Pizza in Highlandtown is a must-visit.
Matthew’s Pizza is located at 3131 Eastern Ave, Baltimore.
