If you’re looking for sushi in Baltimore, you’re bound to come across more than one recommendation for Shoyou Sushi or ‘Sushi Bruce’ in Fed Hill. I had heard that Chef Bruce had the freshest fish and the best creations and it’s within walking distance from where I live. So the better question to ask is why haven’t I been before? I went recently with a friend and remedied that situation immediately. Fun fact, before you head over to Shoyou Sushi, make sure you have cash and booze, it’s BYOB and cash only.
My friend has a thing for Seaweed Salad so we started with that. It was light and refreshing, a great way to start the meal.
We also started Garlic Edamame which was sauteed with soy sauce and garlic. This sauce was awesome, I wanted to drink it with a straw. I ended up holding onto the empty dish when we finished the edamame and my friend and I dipped our sushi in this sauce. It was phenomenal.
The first roll we ordered was the Spicy Tuna Tempura Roll. The roll was lightly battered tempura spicy tuna, served with eel sauce. I didn’t love all the excess tempura on top of the roll, but it was pretty awesome. Because the sushi was lightly fried, the inside was warm which was a nice contrast to everything else we ordered.
The other roll we ordered was the Hawaiian Ahi Roll. The roll was spicy tuna, topped with ahi tuna and seaweed salad. Of the two rolls we ordered, this one was much lighter and I ultimately preferred it more, but they were both fantastic.
I’m looking forward to heading back to Shoyou Sushi to try more of Sushi Bruce’s awesome creations.
