Cool Down in Fells Point with Pitango Gelato’s Creamy Affogato

I’ll admit it — I have a bit of a sweet tooth, but it usually leans toward gummy candies over ice cream. Still, after dinner at Nanami, my favorite sushi spot in Fells Point, my friends were craving dessert. Just a couple of blocks away sits Pitango Gelato, and since they serve some of the best gelato (plus espresso and sipping chocolate), it was an easy choice.

Most of my friends went straight for the gelato — it’s the star of the show here. One friend ordered the Vanilla Chocolate Chip, and it was everything gelato should be: smooth, rich, and full of evenly distributed chocolate chips. She even said it was as good as what she’d had in Italy — high praise!

Another friend opted for a latte, beautifully finished with latte art (which always earns extra points from me). Made with Counter Culture Coffee, it was a solid, well-balanced cup.

I decided on something a little different: an Affogato, a scoop of gelato “drowned” in a shot of hot espresso. I chose chocolate gelato, which melted slowly into the espresso, turning it into a creamy, bittersweet mix — the perfect after-dinner treat.

Pitango also offers an option to pair gelato with their sipping chocolate instead of espresso — a decadent, thick hot chocolate for anyone who prefers something caffeine-free. I skipped it this time since it was a warm summer night, but it’s definitely on my list for winter.
