A few weeks ago, a friend and I tried brunch at SoBo Cafe, and it was wonderful — so much so that we couldn’t wait to go back for dinner. We were looking for a low-key Friday night spot during Baltimore Restaurant Week, and SoBo Cafe in Federal Hill was the perfect choice. Known for its American dishes with a Mediterranean twist, it’s one of those places that always feels welcoming and warm.
My friend started with the Mac-n-Cheese, the same dish she fell in love with during our brunch visit. Let me just say — this is the best mac and cheese either of us has ever had. It’s creamy, cheesy perfection, baked until golden on top and full of flavor. She practically licked the plate clean.
I chose the Spinach Pie, made with crisp phyllo dough stuffed with spinach and feta. As someone who grew up eating my Greek grandmother’s homemade version, I’m picky — but this one was buttery, flaky, and just as delicious. The pastry chef at SoBo Cafe clearly has magic hands.
For our entrées, we both ordered the Dry Rubbed Bavette Steak, served with bacon-onion butter, creamed spinach, and roasted fingerling potatoes. The steak was cooked perfectly medium-rare and packed with flavor, while the creamed spinach added the ideal rich, savory touch.
We noticed several tables ordering the Chicken Pot Pie, which looked incredible with its golden puff pastry topping — definitely worth trying on a future visit.
SoBo Cafe’s pastry program deserves its own spotlight. I couldn’t resist trying one of their Sangria Ice Pops, made with strawberries, pineapple, and a hint of fruity wine. It was refreshing and fun, though not too strong.
For dessert, my friend went with the Brownie Sundae — a warm brownie topped with vanilla ice cream, house-made caramel, and fluffy marshmallow. Even though she was full, she made sure not a bite went to waste.
I chose the Strawberry Shortcake, which was served with a sweet biscuit, rhubarb sauce, basil, and whipped cream. It was absolutely phenomenal — buttery, fresh, and beautifully balanced.
From start to finish, our dinner at SoBo Cafe was exceptional. Whether it’s brunch or dinner, this Federal Hill favorite consistently delivers comforting, flavorful dishes in a cozy neighborhood setting. And whatever you do, don’t skip dessert — the pastry chef is truly next-level.
SoBo Cafe is located at 6 W. Cross St. in Fed Hill.
