Work sends me to San Antonio, TX once or twice a year, and over time I’ve built a list of restaurants I genuinely look forward to every single trip.
These are places I’ve gone back to again and again. And I’m thinking about them before my Southwest flight even lands.
From casual tacos and BBQ to standout dinners and cocktails, here’s exactly where I eat every time I’m in San Antonio.
Coffee & Breakfast Staples
Commonwealth Coffeehouse
This is my go-to start to the day.
- Breakfast tacos that are simple but consistently great
- A strong, well-balanced cortado
- Calm, easy atmosphere before a busy day
It’s reliably good.

Local Coffee
Perfect for a quick stop when:
You need caffeine fast
It’s already hot out
You want something easy but still quality

Casual Lunch You’ll Actually Remember
Taqueria Datapoint (Steak Burrito)
This is not a “grab and go and forget it” kind of lunch.
- Loaded with steak, avocado, and cheese
- Messy in the best way
- Extremely satisfying
Exactly the type of Mexican food that Texas is known for.

One of the Most Unique Meals in San Antonio
Curry Boys BBQ
This spot stands out every single trip.
It’s BBQ—but with a twist:
- Smoky meats + bold Thai curry flavors
- Served over rice with layers of texture
- Completely different from traditional Texas BBQ
The brisket bowl is a must.

The Most Fun Dinner Spot: Hot Joy
Hot Joy (Asian Fusion + Cocktails)
Hot Joy is chaos in the best way—loud, colorful, and full of bold flavors.
Every time I go, I end up ordering a mix of everything:
Some of my Favorites
- Spring Rolls – crispy, light, and a great start
- Duck Wontons – rich, comforting, and packed with flavor
- Hot Fried Chicken – spicy, crunchy, addictive
- Sesame Chicken – a classic done really well
- Fire Chicken Noodles – bold, cheesy, and over-the-top
- Dry Fried Green Beans – one of the best sides on the menu

Best Dinner of My Most Recent Trip:
Battalion (Italian Dinner Spot)
This was one of the most memorable dinners I’ve had in San Antonio.
It’s a more elevated experience—but still relaxed enough to enjoy fully.
What We Ordered
- Burrata – creamy, fresh, perfectly paired with grilled bread
- Gnocchi – soft, rich, and perfectly sauced
- Pumpkin Ravioli – slightly sweet, super flavorful, and unique
- Spinach Dumplings – comforting and packed with flavor
- Chicken Parm – classic, done really well, and incredibly satisfying

Elevated Mexican Dinner
Cuishe Cocina Mexicana
A great option when you want something more elevated but still rooted in local flavors.
- Creative cocktails
- Beautiful plating
- Standout tacos and shareable dishes

Why I Keep Coming Back (For the Food)
San Antonio has one of those food scenes where:
- You can go casual or upscale without sacrificing quality
- There’s always something new to try—but also reliable favorites
It’s not just good food—it’s return-worthy food.
