Williamsburg, Virginia has way more going on than colonial history. Between colorful small plates, craft breweries, bakeries, seafood, BBQ, and frozen treats, it’s the kind of place where you can easily build an entire weekend around what you want to eat next. On my trip, I found everything from chaat and paella to sticky ribs, Detroit-style pizza, bubble tea, ice cream, and brewery flights. If you’re wondering where to eat in Williamsburg VA, these are the dishes and drinks that stood out most.
Masala Craft Indian Kitchen
If you visit Masala Craft Indian Kitchen, do not skip the Chaat of the Day. This was a full flavor bomb in the best way — sweet, sour, spicy, tangy, and crunchy all at once. During our visit, the dish included puffed rice, tamarind, mango, lime, kiwi, and cilantro. It was colorful, bright, and honestly one of those dishes that wakes up every part of your palate.
La Tienda
It feels almost impossible to visit a Spanish restaurant without ordering paella, and at La Tienda, that was absolutely the move. The menu has multiple versions, but we went with the Pollo y Chorizo Paella. The rice had those crispy edges you hope for, and the juicy chorizo, piquillo peppers, and string beans made every bite feel layered and satisfying. Attached to the restaurant is a Spanish market where you can shop for wine, spices, paella kits, and other fun pantry finds.
Cochon on 2nd
Cochon on 2nd has been around for years and is still putting out seriously beautiful food. The standout for me was Moody’s Sticky Ribs, served in a sweet Thai chili sauce. They were glossy, sticky, and the kind of dish that makes you take photos quickly because you know you’re about to demolish them. Sitting near the open kitchen made it even better because we watched plate after plate come off the line.
Shoo Fly Dairy Bar
For dessert, few things hit harder than ice cream on a hot summer day. Shoo Fly Dairy Bar delivered exactly what I wanted with a chocolate and vanilla twist cone made with local dairy. It’s simple, classic, and the shop itself is adorable if you’re looking for a cute Williamsburg dessert stop.
Baker’s Crust Artisan Kitchen
The Shakshouka at Baker’s Crust Artisan Kitchen was one of the prettiest brunch dishes of the trip. Poached eggs, tomato sauce, avocado, and feta all came together in a bowl that was bright, colorful, and full of flavor. It’s the kind of dish that tastes as good as it looks.
Alewerks Brewing Company
A tasting flight is always my move at a new brewery, and Alewerks Brewing Company made that decision easy. It’s a great way to sample a range of beers and figure out what you want more of later. My favorite was Kalypso’s Island, a Belgian Blonde, but definitely talk to the bartender if you want help finding the right beer for your taste.
Amber Ox Public House
For something creative, Amber Ox Public House really delivered. On our server’s recommendation, we ordered the Squash Elote, and I have thought about it ever since. A whole roasted squash was topped with cotija cheese, pickled red onions, salsa matcha aioli, and chicharrons. It was unexpected, colorful, and absolutely delicious. Bonus: while you’re there, you can also try beers from their neighboring brewery, Precarious Beer Project.
Zaaaahhh! Pizza at The Bake Shop
Detroit-style pizza has been having a moment for a reason, and Zaaaahhh! Pizza at The Bake Shop brings that cheesy, crispy, doughy magic to Williamsburg. We tried both the Hipster Special and the Patatas Bravas, and both came with big flavor and dramatic sauce drizzles. Also, do not ignore the breads and pastries here — they looked very worth saving room for.
The Social Terrace at the Williamsburg Inn
Snacks and cocktails are always a good pairing, and The Social Terrace at the Williamsburg Inn is a lovely place to do exactly that. The Garden Beet Hummus immediately caught our attention because beet hummus is usually bright pink and beautiful, and this one delivered. It was fresh, colorful, and perfect with a drink on a warm day.
Secret Garden Café
I absolutely love bubble tea, especially on a hot day. At Secret Garden Café, I went with my usual: Mango Green Tea with Mango Jelly. It had a nice balance of mango flavor and plenty of jellies, which are always my favorite part. It was refreshing, vibrant, and a great afternoon pick-me-up.
Blackbird Bakery
Located in Merchant’s Square, Blackbird Bakery is a charming stop for sweets and pastries. We tried a few things, including a canelé, chocolate chip cookie, and blueberry lemon loaf, but the standout was the custard-filled donut. It was bite-sized, fluffy, and delicious. Pro tip: go early because some items do sell out.
Wythe Candy + Gourmet Shop
If you have a sweet tooth, Wythe Candy + Gourmet Shop is dangerous in the best way. The selection of gummies, chocolates, and dipped treats is massive. I went for a caramel apple with chocolate and peanuts, which had that perfect mix of crisp apple, chewy caramel, chocolate, and crunch.
Charly’s Airport Restaurant
Sometimes the atmosphere is just as memorable as the food. At Charly’s Airport Restaurant, you can sit along the runway and watch planes land and take off while eating a sandwich on fresh baked bread. The French Dip was fantastic, and if you go on a Saturday, there is usually plenty of plane watching. Definitely save room for a housemade dessert.
Virginia Beer Company
Virginia Beer Company is another great Williamsburg brewery stop. My favorite was One Night in Maine, a blueberry sour with a gorgeous purple hue. They also have plenty of hoppier beers, so this is another place where it’s worth asking the bartender for recommendations.
Old City Barbecue Food Truck
The Loaded Mac N Cheese from Old City Barbecue Food Truck was exactly the kind of over-the-top comfort food I wanted. Mac and cheese topped with brisket, sweet BBQ sauce, and scallions is pretty hard to argue with. It was cheesy, meaty, and completely drool-worthy.
Culture Café
Chicken and waffles is one of my favorite brunch dishes because it hits sweet, salty, and savory all at once. The version at Culture Café came with local honey and was a total standout. Also, make sure to check out the house-made breads and pastries while you’re there.
Electric Circus/Precarious Beer Project
Electric Circus and Precarious Beer Project is a fun stop when you need to recharge. There’s a beer hall, taco shack, and arcade all in one place, which makes it perfect if you want something casual before continuing to explore Williamsburg.
Mobjack Bay Coffee Roasters
Nothing starts a travel day like a good cup of coffee, and Mobjack Bay Coffee Roasters is a solid stop to get the day going. Add this to your Williamsburg coffee list if you’re building a food-focused itinerary.
