Shenandoah National Park Weekend Itinerary (Postcard Cabins in Basye, VA + Skyline Drive + Food Stops)

Planning a Shenandoah Weekend Getaway

If you’re planning a trip to Shenandoah, I’ve already put together a full guide with hikes, overlooks, and tips you can use alongside this itinerary in my complete Shenandoah National Park guide.

Getting there is part of the experience, especially if you’re road-tripping. If you’re coming from Maryland or Pennsylvania, this route pairs well with my I-83 road trip stops from Baltimore to Harrisburg or my guide to traveling Virginia via I-81.

Where We Stayed: Postcard Cabins

We stayed at a Postcard Cabin Shenandoah North, part of the Marriott portfolio, tucked into the woods just outside Shenandoah National Park by Bryce Ski Resort.

The setup is simple but thoughtfully designed—big windows, a cozy bed, a small kitchenette, indoor bathroom, and just enough space to feel comfortable without distractions. Waking up to sunlight through the trees and having slow, quiet mornings is exactly the type of experience we were looking for.

If you enjoy this kind of cabin experience, I had a similar stay in North Carolina that you can read about here: Getaway House Asheboro cabin stay. The big difference between these two trips is we stayed an extra night and it was so worth it. It let us lean into nature and relaxing without feeling like it was already time to head home.

Campfire Cooking (One of the Highlights)

A big part of this trip was cooking over the fire:

  • Steak with string beans and foil-wrapped sweet potatoes
  • Campfire pancakes in a cast iron skillet
  • Fish tacos with a corn and mango slaw
  • Warmed up a cinnamon roll from Red Truck Bakery

Cooking outside added to the whole experience and really made us slow down.

Best Hikes & Views in Shenandoah

Stony Man + Little Stony Man

An easy hike with a big payoff. This is one of the best options if you want incredible views without a long or difficult climb. We ended up hiking both trails, about 3 miles combined.

Bearfence Mountain

One of the most memorable hikes of the trip, because I was just a little unprepared for the rock scrambles.

It’s short, but the rock scramble makes it significantly harder than anything else we’ve hiked. The 360-degree views at the top are some of the best in the park. Trail is about 1 mile.

Little Hogback Mountain

A quieter overlook with wide, open views. It’s a great place to stop without dealing with large crowds. The trail is 0.8 miles.

Carson Mountain

This was a super quiet trail in the northern part of Shenandoah. The hike was about a mile but it was missing some of the sweeping views from the other tails we hiked.

Kaylor’s Knob

Outside of Shenandoah in the George Washington National Forest, we went for a 3.5 mile hike near Manassutten. This was also a super peaceful trail with some nice views of the surrounding ridges and valleys.

Where We Ate & Drank

This trip ended up having a strong mix of local spots. My wife and I went out for lunch after all our hikes, we explored some coffee shops, and one night we went to dinner after a particularly taxing hike.

Woodstock Brewhouse

A great stop after hiking.

  • Good selection of beers
  • BBQ chicken wings
  • Relaxed, easy atmosphere

If you enjoy stops like this, you might also like my Virginia brewery weekend in Floyd or my Asheville brewery itinerary.

Pack’s Frozen Custard

A classic post-hike stop.

Simple, nostalgic, and exactly what you want after a long day outside.

If you’re always looking for dessert spots, I’ve rounded up favorites in my Baltimore ice cream guide.

Broad Porch Coffee Co.

A quick coffee stop that ended up being worth it.

Skyland Resort

We stopped here for lunch mainly for the view, but the food worked well after a morning of hiking.

Route 11 Potato Chips

A quick stop to grab snacks and stretch your legs. It’s a fun addition if you’re driving through the area.

Vibrissa Beer

A solid stop to wrap up the trip, right in the heart of Mount Royal.

  • Crisp, refreshing beers
  • Outdoor seating
  • A large soft pretzel with dipping sauces

It was an easy, low-key place to end the weekend.
