Locust Point: Umi Sake

Update: Umi Sake is now closed.

When I was a Towson student, plenty of times my friends and I would head up to Umi Sake in Timonium for sushi and Chinese food. When I found out they were expanding and opening a location in Locust Point, right near my apartment, I was thrilled. My friend was craving Chinese food so we decided to check out Umi Sake in Locust Point. I’ve been living in Federal Hill for about a year and a half, in that time the space that is currently Umi Sake has been two Asian restaurants prior to that. First it was Red Parrot Asian Grill, then it was House of Asia. While it’s currently Umi Sake, the decor hasn’t changed a bit.

When we were seated, my friend ordered Edamame for us to share. The edamame was good, nothing to write home about.

My friend was craving Chinese, so she ordered Chicken & String Beans. Unfortunately this dish came out cold and she was disappointed overall. She told our waitress, who then heated up the dish, but my friend still found it to be lackluster.

I was in the mood for sushi, so I ordered the Spicy Indian Roll.  This roll was tuna and salmon tartar then topped with white tuna and salmon and drizzled with spicy sauce. The fish was fresh and the roll combined all of my favorite things – tuna, salmon, and spicy sauce – it’s no surprise that I loved it.

I also ordered the Sweet Heart Maki which was adorably shaped like a heart. Inside the roll was spicy tuna and avocado which was then topped with tuna and spicy sauce. Because it had mostly the same ingredients as my other roll, they obviously tasted very similar – and I don’t mean that in a bad way. I loved both rolls. This one was a little on the larger side and nearly impossible to eat in one bite so it ended up being a little messier.

While the Chinese food at Umi Sake was a little off its game, the sushi was still wonderful and I would go back if I was in the area.
