Of all the coffee shops and lunch spots I’ve visited in Baltimore, Artifact Coffee in Hampden is one of my favorites. I’ve been there countless times, and each visit impresses me — from the creative menu to the attentive service from the baristas.
Artifact Coffee is one of the restaurants owned by Spike and Amy Gjerde, who also run Woodberry Kitchen and several other popular spots in the area.
My absolute favorite dish is the Butternut Squash Soup. Creamy with a subtle kick of spice and topped with crunchy croutons, it’s hands-down the best soup I’ve ever had.
Another standout is the Chunky Tomato Bread Soup. Full of hearty chunks of bread and cheese, it pairs perfectly with a grilled cheese — especially the cafe’s own Bread and Butter Pickle Grilled Cheese. This unique sandwich combines cheddar cheese with a tangy bread-and-butter pickle, adding a flavorful crunch that takes a classic grilled cheese to the next level.
For those craving a more traditional sandwich, the Roast Beef Sandwich is a winner. Thinly sliced roast beef, fresh bread, cheese, lettuce, and horseradish mayo make it simple but delicious.
If you’re looking for a great side, the Fingerling Potatoes are perfectly roasted, tender, and seasoned — an ideal companion to any sandwich.
Of course, no visit to Artifact Coffee is complete without a cup of coffee. Their latte is my favorite, complete with beautiful latte art. The only minor drawback is that they don’t offer skim milk, but it’s a small complaint compared to the overall quality of the coffee.
Artifact Coffee offers a variety of creative dishes and beverages, so you really can’t go wrong with anything you order.
Artifact Coffee is located at 1500 Union Avenue, in Hampden.
