For my birthday, my girlfriend and I wanted to try something low-key.
Instead of planning a big night out or a packed trip, we booked a tiny cabin at Getaway House in Asheboro, North Carolina. The goal was simple: slow down for a couple of days and spend more time outside. Hopefully get to see some foliage.
It ended up being exactly what we were looking for – unfortunately minus the leaves changing colors. My birthday was just a bit too early.
Staying at Getaway House Asheboro
The cabins are small, simple, and set up to help you disconnect.
Inside, you’ve got:
- A bed facing a large window looking out into the woods
- A compact kitchen
- Minimal design with no distractions
The perfect quiet space where you’re not tempted to stay on your phone or rush through the day.

Cooking Over the Fire
We decided to cook breakfast and dinner instead of going out, which ended up being one of the highlights.

We kept it simple:
- Chicken sausages
- White beans
- Grilled Steaks
- Breakfast Tacos
- S’mores
Everything was made over the fire outside. It took a little longer than a normal meal, but it was such a fun activity to do together.

Evenings at the Cabin
After dinner, we stayed outside by the fire. We talked, we ate s’mores, we looked at nature. It was super relaxing.

Day 2: Hiking, Exploring, and a Few Local Stops
The next morning started slow—coffee, a quiet view of the trees, and no rush to get moving.
After that, we headed out to hike in Uwharrie National Forest. The trails were peaceful and not too crowded, with just enough elevation to make it interesting without being difficult.
On the way back, we stopped at the Pisgah Covered Bridge, which is one of only two remaining historic covered bridges in North Carolina. It’s a quick stop, but definitely worth seeing if you’re nearby.

Lunch at The Table in Asheboro
After hiking, we stopped at The Table in Asheboro for lunch.
It was exactly what we needed after being outside:
- A steak sandwich with fries
- A roasted chicken, kale, and sweet potato salad
- Coffee to reset a bit
- Maple pie
Everything was delicious, I can see why there was a line out the door when we arrived.

Quick Stop at Four Saints Brewing
From there, we headed to Four Saints Brewing Company in the heart of Asheboro, NC.
It’s a relaxed spot with a good beer selection and an easy place to hang out for a bit before heading back to the cabin.

Exploring Seagrove, North Carolina

While in Asheboro, we took a drive through Seagrove, North Carolina, along the Pottery Highway.
The area is known for its pottery scene, with dozens of small studios and shops along the route. You can stop in wherever looks interesting, and each place has its own style.
We came across:
- Handmade ceramics
- Locally blown glass
- Some more decorative items
It’s a unique stop and a fun way to spend a few hours and buy something different.
If you’re looking for a quiet weekend in North Carolina, Getaway House Asheboro is a solid option.
Just plan for at least two nights—you’ll want the extra time.
